Palestinian tanna. He was one of the last pupils of
Akiva and was among those who re-established the academy in Jabneh, and then in Usha after the Hadrianic persecutions. He wrote the
Baraita of Thirty-Two Rules, which enables the aggadah to be expounded like the halakhah by fixed hermeneutical rules. He was one of the greatest aggadists of his time.
